One thought on “John McKinley dies at 66; former PBS staffer recalled by friends as iconoclast

  1. John was one of the best bosses I have ever had, and truly one of the most unusual. I began working with him in acquisitions in 1980, and anyone who remembers those days also remembers the tumbleweed in his office, and the postcard “End of the Trail” tacked on his door opening, of a dead cowboy having his guts feasted upon by a vulture. I learned how to screen programs for him, and his own screening reports became the stuff of legend. John was appropriately contemptuous of authority, and a brilliantly read, kind person who loved to share his knowledge and wicked wit. RIP, John!
