Paula Sulinski, a former communications executive at Detroit Public TV, died June 7 of natural causes. She was 59.

Sulinski began her pubmedia career as publicity coordinator for Detroit’s WDET-FM in 1972 before joining DPTV (then WTVS) in 1976. She was the first hire for the station’s nascent communications division.

“When I was looking for somebody to help me tell this story about all the great things Detroit Public TV has to offer, she was my first choice,” said Dan Alpert, DPTV senior v.p., citing her work at WDET. Sulinski “gave me some of her best support by frankly but tactfully telling me what the staff needed and expected of me as their manager,” he said. “It was an invaluable lesson.”

Sulinski stayed at the station until her retirement in 1993, rising to the rank of v.p. of communications and design services. She left the station to form her own PR firm.

From 1990-91 she chaired PBS’s Advertising and Promotion Advisory Committee. She also chaired the Michigan Public Broadcasting Association’s awards committee for two years. Health issues limited her work in recent years.

Sulinski’s family is remembering her privately.
