Readers of Edutopia magazine learned that Garrison Keillor was inspired to invent his daily short, The Writer’s Almanac, by a good experience at the Minnesota State Fair in 1993. Instead of holding a trivia contest, as planned, Keillor walked into the crowd and asked fairgoers to recite favorite poems. Which they did.
